ORNITHOLOGICAL TOURISM
Serra del Boumort
The Serra de Boumort is a ridge of limestone located between the Pyrenees and the Lleida plains. It emerges in the comarca of El Pallars Jussà, although its slopes also extend out towards El Pallars Sobirà and the valleys of L’Alt Urgell. Its highest point is at Cap de Boumort (2,076 m).
The Protected Natural Space of the Serra del Boumort is a mountain location that descends in the form of numerous buttresses which stretch out between a series of ravines. This is a steep, rugged ridge with a predominance of Scots pine, oak and boxwood. However, on its highest parts, there is an abundance of almost alpine meadows and of Spanish pine, so an itinerary through this ridge offers a great variety of landscapes and habitats. It therefore also offers many cliff and mountain birds.
At Boumort, it is possible to see the black woodpecker, the Eurasian woodcock, and even Tengmalm’s owl. There is also the grey partridge and a good range of raptors and scavengers. This is the only place in Europe where the four major species of vulture: the griffon vulture, the common vulture, the black vulture and the Egyptian vulture, breed at the same location. It is also possible to see these birds in other parts of the Pre-Pyrenees.
Various companies dedicated to ornithological tourism and photographing birds operate at Boumort, and offer some excellent vantage points from which to take photos. Some of these companies also specialise in the four types of vultures.
On its eastern margin, visitors will again find the Pyrenees, with the Natural Mountain Space of Alinyà, which lies between the Serra del Cadí massif and the River Segre. This is the largest privately-owned estate in Catalonia and its more than 5,000 ha are dedicated to conservation, environmental education and ornithological tourism. If you need guides here, it should be quite easy to find them.
