Like the black-bellied sandgrouse, after suffering a serious fall in numbers, it is now only found in the drylands of the Aiguabarreig (river confluence), between Seròs and La Granja d'Escarp, and much more sparsely, in the drylands of Alfés-Castelldans. In total, there may be only 40 to 70 breeding pairs.
