ORNITHOLOGICAL TOURISM
The natural space of Naut Aran and the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park
These two large spaces provide an excellent examples of typical Pyrenean high-mountain scenery and offer us the opportunity to observe species that are rare, or even absent, outside the Pyrenees. The bearded vulture, the golden eagle, the wood grouse, the ptarmigan, Tengmalm’s owl, the grey partridge, the wallcreeper, the ring ouzel and the citril finch, amongst others, are clear examples of objectives for ornithologists.
Naut Aran is located to the north of the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park. Both have very good points of access (including La Bonaigua and the Baqueira Beret ski resort) as they are used for snow sport tourism.
According to the habitats of the species birders wish to see, it may be necessary to follow trails through different environments. It is relevant to highlight that these could include alpine meadows, scree and conifer forests, as well as rocky mountains and valleys.
It is also possible to follow some flatter and easier routes to get there, such as travelling from the Pla de Beret to the village of Montgarri, in the heart of the Val d'Aran. There, you will find a large range of high-mountain habitats. Within just 11 km, you will also be able to enjoy seeing some of the most reclusive perching birds to be found in this area.
Approximately half of the Pyrenean territory is protected and there is a good network of information and interpretation centres. It will therefore probably be the time that you have available that will determine the length of your stay in the Pyrenees.
