Black-bellied sandgrouse

Pterocles orientalis

The black-bellied sandgrouse is characteristic of large plains in semi-arid and steppe environments. In the lands of Western Catalonia, its largest population can be found in El Segrià. In fact, Lleida is home to the total population in Catalonia, where it is considered a species in danger of extinction. It only breeds in El Segrià and La Noguera and there is an estimated population of only 9 to 11 breeding pairs.
